Truck Carrying Embalming Fluids Overturns

January 18th, 2011

A tractor-trailer hauling embalming fluids and other chemicals overturned on eastbound Interstate 70. One lane has reopened, but the other two will remain closed until the afternoon. The 1999 International tractor was hauling two trailers when it ran off the right side of the eastbound highway, east of Route 27 in Carroll County. The tractor-trailer jack-knifed and crashed. After the incident, a pickup truck driver crashed into the wreckage. The 59-year-old tractor-trailer driver was treated at Howard County General Hospital for minor injuries, while the pickup driver was not hurt.

According to news reports, the collision is under investigation, as authorities determine the exact cause. The tractor-trailer was holding 55-gallon drums including embalming fluid, refrigerants and wood preservatives. Some of the liquids spilled. Haz-Mat and the Maryland Department of the Enviornment were assisting clean-up at the scene. The road was closed due to debris and icy conditions. Cargo was removed from the truck prior to the road reopening, and police said they were not dangerous to nearby residents.
