Some people don't think a whiplash injury is that serious. Usually the people who believe it's not that serious haven't felt the devastating pain that whiplash provides. We at Greenberg & Bederman believe that an injury of whiplash should not be dismissed and we strive to help you rebuild your life as you heal from your whiplash injury.

Whiplash

Whiplash and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) represent a range of injuries to the neck caused by or related to a sudden distortion of the neck.

Whiplash is commonly associated with automobile accidents, usually when the vehicle has been hit in the rear; however, the injury can be sustained in many other ways, including falls from motorcycles, or animals, or other head banging activities such as baby shaking syndrome,

Cause

How the injury of whiplash is caused is unknown. A whiplash injury can be the result of an unwanted stretching of the spine, mainly the anterior longitudinal ligament, which tears as the head snaps forward and then back again.

Whiplash may be caused by motion from a rear-end-collision in an automobile, on rides at an amusement park, from sports injuries, or from public transportation such as airplane or train travel, or from being hit or shaken. Shaken baby syndrome can result in a whiplash injury.

Symptoms

Symptoms of whiplash include: pain and aching to the neck and back, referred pain to the shoulders, sensory disturbance (such as pins and needles) to the arms & legs and headaches. Symptoms can appear directly after the injury, but often are not felt until days after the injury. Whiplash is usually confined to the spinal cord (neck to pubic bone), and the most common areas of the spinal cord affected by whiplash are the neck, and the mid-back (middle of the spine).
