Whiplash
Whiplash and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) represent a range of injuries to the neck caused by or related to a sudden distortion of the neck.
Whiplash is commonly associated with automobile accidents, usually when the vehicle has been hit in the rear; however, the injury can be sustained in many other ways, including falls from motorcycles, or animals, or other head banging activities such as baby shaking syndrome.
Cause
How the injury of whiplash is caused is unknown. A whiplash injury can be the result of an unwanted stretching of the spine, mainly the anterior longitudinal ligament, which tears as the head snaps forward and then back again.
Whiplash may be caused by motion from a rear-end-collision in an automobile, on rides at an amusement park, from sports injuries, or from public transportation such as airplane or train travel, or from being hit or shaken. Shaken baby syndrome can result in a whiplash injury.
Symptoms
Symptoms of whiplash include: pain and aching to the neck and back, referred pain to the shoulders, sensory disturbance (such as pins and needles) to the arms & legs and headaches. Symptoms can appear directly after the injury, but often are not felt until days after the injury. Whiplash is usually confined to the spinal cord (neck to pubic bone), and the most common areas of the spinal cord affected by whiplash are the neck, and the mid-back (middle of the spine).
If you think you may be suffering from whiplash because of an accident, it is vital that you get your injuries treated as soon as possible. Whiplash is a major injury that should never be neglected. Whiplash--especially if left undiagnosed--can lead to lifelong complications, and pain for the sufferer.Â
The principle definition of whiplash is, an injury of the neck caused by sudden deceleration or acceleration. It usually happnes when a vehicle moves suddenly forward, or backwards, your neck is quickly jerked in the opposite direction of vehicle movement. Whiplash usually occurs while driving or riding in a vehicle, but it can also happen during sports acitivities.Â
Since whiplash is a serious injury, if a third party causes you or a loved one to suffer it, you have the right to claim compensation. If you have whiplash, you cannot work, and will require medical care, and medication. You shouldn't have to pay for these expenses, or suffer from lost wages. You should consult with an attorney that can help you to receive the damages your are owed. Whiplash Treatment
Most people consider a rear end auto collision to be a minor accident. While it’s true that the damage to the automobile may only be cosmetic, the same does not hold true for the driver and passengers of the vehicle that is hit. Whiplash and cervical and spinal column injuries can cause a lifetime of pain and suffering.
Whiplash Can Be a Hidden Injury
This type of injury can remain hidden for several months or years with no pain at first. They are veritably unpredictable. One may go for a few weeks and feel fine, then suddenly the pain begins. A slow aggravating ache that just doesn’t go away or a sudden pattern of headaches for which there is no obvious cause. It can take a long process of elimination to finally diagnose the root cause. It may only be a slight bruising to a disc, but it will eventually show itself.Â
Long Term Pain
It can also be an obvious injury for which there is immediate pain. A cervical collar may be worn for a period of time to give the injury time to heal. However, it may never completely heal. The pain may come and go during daily activities. Even lifting the smallest weight could very well bring on a pain episode that lasts for several days.
Chiropractic Treatment
Treatment by a chiropractor will be helpful in alleviating immediate pain and in strengthening bones and muscles. A regimen of several months is usually required to complete the program.
Physical Therapy Treatment
Additional treatment by a physical therapist is usually required to get the injured person back to a point of being pain free. There is still always the risk of future pain episodes.
Miscellaneous Information
Whiplash injuries manifest in ways other than back or neck pain. It can be the cause of headaches, loss of motion, injured muscles or dizzy spells. Over one hundred thousand whiplash injuries and claims are documented in the United States per year. In any large city in Maryland such as Baltimore or any other city where there is traffic congestion there are definitely more instances of injuries than in rural areas.
Anyone who has even the potential for such an injury should seek the services of a reputable law firm to insure that the pain and suffering associated with these types of injuries are monetarily compensated for, in the present and in the future.
