If you have had a hip replacement surgery after July of 2003, you may have received a recalled hip replacement product.
DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, has issued a recall on two types of hip replacement products. Some patients who received the ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System have experienced pain and symptoms that may require corrective surgery.
The recalled ASR Hip replacement products contain metal components that may wear down over time and release small debris particles. Some patients may have a negative reaction to these particles that causes swelling to occur in the surrounding muscles and joint.
On their website DePuy Othopedics states, “While this condition may initially be painless, if left untreated, this reaction may cause pain and swelling around the joint and could damage some of the muscles, bones, and nerves around the hip.”
According to the New York Times, the F.D.A. has received about 400 complaints from patients who received the DePuy ASR Hip devices. To read the related New York Times article, Johnson & Johnson recalls Hip Implants – click here.
