Research Shows More Risk for Obese in Car Wrecks

Obese people are up to 80% more likely to die in an auto accident, according to recently released research. Researchers say this is due to the fact that vehicles are designed for passengers that have an average weight. The study was conducted by scientists at the University of California at Berkely. They analyzed data from 1996-2008 including over 57,000 car wrecks. The Body Mass Index of the victim’s was researched and they found there is an increase in risk by 19% for underweight drivers, and for those with a BMI of 40 or over, their risk increased by 80%, according to news reports.

Mother Collides with Utility Pole

A collision on San Antonio’s east side may be the result of distracted driving. The wreck happened when a female driver with four children in the vehicle hit a utility pole. She may have been tending to one of the children when the wreck happened. Two of the children were not hurt, while one was taken to a nearby hospital for a bleeding nose. Immediately after the wreck, emergency crews shut-off the power to a service line. Eastbound and westbound traffic was closed for approximately one half-hour while crews cleared the scene of the crash, according to news reports. The driver was not cited.

Elderly Driver Smashes into Family

An elderly driver lost control of his Mercedes and veered off the roadway in London. A father walking with his wife and child had just enough time to push his child out of the way. The 83-year-old driver was treated for minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation and police have not made any arrests as of yet. The mother was bending over to talk to her son when the driver collided into them. Messages and flowers were left at the site of the collision, according to news reports.

Active City Stop Prevents Low-Speed Crashes

A new collision avoidance technology was introduced in the Ford Fiesta called the Active City Stop. It uses lights and sensors to scan the roadway ahead of the vehicle and prevent a crash. Slow, city traffic is often the reason behind low-speed collisions due to the high volume of traffic involved. Half-a-million are injured every year in car wrecks throughout cities in several European countries. One crash in eight are rear-end crashes, which Active City Stop aims to reduce. It works by monitoring the gap in front of the vehicle and calculating the risk of hitting a vehicle and delivers a necessary braking response, according to news reports.

Garbage Truck Collides

It seems that even with laws in place against texting and driving one woman didn’t heed, as a result she crashed right into a garbage truck. Two people ended up in the hospital and the 2005 Toyota Avalon was completely totaled. A summons was issued to a 32 year old named Jennifer Wright.

Distracted Driver Injured After Wreck

In Los Angeles an unlicensed driver was texting while driving when she suddenly ran a red light. The passenger bus crossing the intersection at the same time slammed into a tree to try and avoid a wreck. There were seven passengers on the bus, all of whom complained of injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The woman who caused the accident was reportedly injured as well.

In Bakersfield, CA, a car crashed into the “Got Safety?” first aid store. The owner said that he had been inside the store minutes before the car came through the wall. The owner had been asking for barriers to be installed outside of the store, but the city refused saying that there was no history of accidents. Alcohol appeared to be a factor in the accident.
