A patron of Dogfish Head Alehouse in Gathersburg, Maryland was served 17 beers and three shots, then drove off and crashed and killed a 10-year-old girl. A dram shop liability law is now under consideration which would hold restaurants and bars responsible if a patron consumes to much then injures or kills someone. The patron is now serving eight years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter. The family of the victim sued the alehouse for more than $3 million. The judge said at first the case would go to trial, then later dismissed it, saying the Maryland Court of Appeals should consider it as a change to change state law, according to news reports.

Intoxicated Driver Parks in Middle of Highway
A driver in Orangeburg County, South Carolina parked in the middle of the highway while intoxicated on Saturday. The motorist blocked traffic, and when officers pulled up to the vehicle, the driver drove away. They only made it one mile, although, when they stopped in the middle of the road again. The driver told police he drank liquor after taking medication. Two liquor bottles, half-empty, were discovered in the car. He was charged with public disorderly conduct and for having open containers, according to news reports.

Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard the case of Dale Berriman who was pulled over by police when seen driving erratically along the Princes Freeway. Suspected of drunk driving, he was also discovered using a mobile device at the same time. When he was finally subjected to the breathalyser, it read that his blood-alcohol content was .227; well over the the legal limit of .05.

ODOT Offers Driving Simulation
The Ohio Department of Transportation will be offering a distracted driver simulator at the Belmont County Fair. Deputy director Lloyd McAdams says that drivers can choose to simulate as a drunk or sober driver and receive text messages on their cellphone as they attempt to drive. With a new law going into effect that will fine drivers for texting while driving the simulator is meant to give drivers the most realistic experience possible. The simulator will be on exhibit between noon and 8:30PM every day of the fair.

Patrols Added for 4th of July
Maryland State Police are preparing for extra patrols during the Fourth of July holiday. They will be looking out for signs of drunken driving, and arresting drivers before they cause any harm to themselves and others. They are also looking for other dangerous drivers who are speeding or driving aggressively. The officers are using extra patrols in areas where more car wrecks have happened, according to news reports. “Maryland is a great place to live, visit, and have fun during the summer, but unfortunately, there are those who use holiday events as opportunities to overindulge and ultimately threaten the safety of others on our roads and highways,” Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Marcus L. Brown said in a release. “We are prepared to meet the demands of increased traffic and increased highway hazards with extra troopers and focused patrols aimed at keeping motorists on our highways safe. I urge everyone traveling this holiday not to drink and drive, to obey the speed limits, and always buckle up.” Drivers can expect to see more police officers on the roadway, especially between 8pm and 4am when a majority of wrecks occur.

Multiple Injuries, Fatality After Charles County Wreck
