The Most Common House Hazards

There are many hazards inside a home that everyone should be aware of, since they could lead to costs property damage or injury. “It’s important to be aware of these dangers and to take proper care to reduce risks and stay safe,” says Chris Hall, president of the replacement parts website. Here’s how with tips from Consumer Reports, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and RepairClinic. Fires due to clothing dryers were the reason for approximately 14,000 fires, 10 deaths, and $84 million in damages between 2002-2009, according to news reports. The fires were usually the result of a blocked dryer vent. “If you notice that it’s taking longer for your clothes to dry, it’s likely that lint is clogging the venting system,” says Hall. Always take precautions for your dryer by clearing the lint screen before or after each load, along the dryer vent, exhaust duct, and behind the dryer, where lint is also prone to building up. White vinyl venting is not considered safe anymore and homeowners should replace it with aluminum, or metal ducts.

Microwave ovens account for approximately two electrocution deaths per year, many due to do-it-yourself repairs on microwaves. They are extremely high voltage, which could be extremely dangerous if a customer touched the electrical parts, and the chances of electrical shock still exists even if the microwave is unplugged. Consumer Reports recommends purchasing a new unit if your old one breaks, since the cost of repairs are often equal to a new device. Walk-behind mower injuries also accounted for 40,000 injuries due to debris which became picked up by a lawn mower and thrown at the user. Consumer Reports advises customers to clear their lawn before starting to mow. Other ways to prevent this hazard is to check blades regularly for damage or dullness. They need to be replaced every one or two years. Children and pets should always be kept inside while the lawn mower is being operated, and never change the position of the deflector. Also check to make sure the protective rubber trail is working properly and there is no damage.

As a personal injury attorney, I hope everybody follows these safety tips to make sure their home is free from damage. If you believe you or a loved one were harmed by an unsafe product or recklessness, you may want to discuss your case with an attorney.
