Patrols Added for 4th of July

Maryland State Police are preparing for extra patrols during the Fourth of July holiday. They will be looking out for signs of drunken driving, and arresting drivers before they cause any harm to themselves and others. They are also looking for other dangerous drivers who are speeding or driving aggressively. The officers are using extra patrols in areas where more car wrecks have happened, according to news reports. “Maryland is a great place to live, visit, and have fun during the summer, but unfortunately, there are those who use holiday events as opportunities to overindulge and ultimately threaten the safety of others on our roads and highways,” Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Marcus L. Brown said in a release. “We are prepared to meet the demands of increased traffic and increased highway hazards with extra troopers and focused patrols aimed at keeping motorists on our highways safe. I urge everyone traveling this holiday not to drink and drive, to obey the speed limits, and always buckle up.” Drivers can expect to see more police officers on the roadway, especially between 8pm and 4am when a majority of wrecks occur.

Their goal is to have 95.5% of all motorists wear their seat belts across the state by the end of 2012 and decrease the number of car accident injuries. The campaign will include checkpoints to make sure all drivers and passengers are using safety belts, as well as advertising campaigns through local and national media that supports wearing seat belts regularly and increasing seat belt usage during the night time, according to news reports.

As a personal injury attorney, I hope this safety campaign encourages more widespread use of seat belt.
