Sheriff’s Deputy, Truck Driver Injured in Route 5 Crash

In a press release, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department reported that one of their deputies was injured, along with another driver, in a crash on Route 5 in Leonardtown Friday afternoon.

The report stated that the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Deputy was responding to an assault in Leonardtown when the accident happened around noon. The deputy was driving a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria southbound in the number 2 lane on Maryland Route 5. She was operating the patrol vehicle in emergency mode with the lights and siren activated when a Mechanicsville woman pulled her 1996 GMC Jimmy out of a parking lot and into the officer’s path on Route 5. The impact of the collision overturned the GMC, trapping the driver inside and totaled both vehicles.

The deputy was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where she was treated and released. The driver of the GMC Jimmy was taken by helicopter to P.G. Shock Trauma for the treatment of major injuries after being extricated from the vehicle by emergency crews.

An initial investigation revealed that the driver of the GMC Jimmy had failed to yield the right of way to a passing emergency vehicle employing emergency signals. At the time of the report, it was unknown whether alcohol played a role in the accident.
