Florida Sheriff Campaigns for Texting Ban

A sheriff in Naples, Florida started a campaign to make texting while driving illegal. He plans to unveil the details of his plan today. During the past three years, lawmakers have debated a bill which would ban texting while driving. They have failed to create any laws. Senator Nancy Detert introduced legislation recently that would ban texting while driving, making it a secondary offense. This would make it so drivers could be cited only if they were stopped for a different violation before caught texting, according to news reports. Many say they want to see a ban on all use of cell phones while behind the wheel, according to news reports.

Police Looking for New Ways to Catch Texters

Police are trying to enforce the texting laws, but having trouble doing so. A federal grant was recently provided to police in order to catch unsafe drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will provide them $550,000, which allows police to test ways to stop texting, such as roving patrols and advertising. Their goal is to find “real-world protocols and practices to better detect if a person is texting while driving,” said NHTSA chief David Strickland. 38 states have introduced bans. In many states, holding a phone in your hand isn’t enough to get you a ticket, the officer has to see you type on it. Very few tickets have been issued so far. The NHTSA issued the grant in order to help fund police look for texting drivers using unmarked vehicles to look down onto drivers from overpasses.

There is a debate on whether or not to ban all cellphone use altogether, and it hasn’t gained support in Congress yet, according to news reports.

Texting Myths Broken

While a number of people think that it is okay to drive and send a text message at the same time, many reports are offered up as proof to negate that belief. Bezotte and other law officials worry that the fact that a lot of drivers have been able to distract themselves and drive without any consequences will let them think they can continue to do so with the same result, while that is not the case.
