Toning Shoes May Lead to Injuries

A recent analysis conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that toning shoes could send you to the doctor. Complaints have been piling up against the shoes, which claim to exercise and tone your legs and behind. Since May 22, 2011, 36 individuals reported injuries resulting from the toning shoes, which include tendinitis, along with foot, leg and hip pain. 15 of those reports were broken bones, which led to surgery. Experts say the shoes are causing problems because they are designed to cause instability in users, making them trigger muscle use they wouldn’t ordinarily engage. However, the instability leads to falls, turned ankles, and other problems instead. Those with balance issues report the most problems.

According to Consumer Reports, the average age of those reporting injuries is 46, and many reported being in good physical condition before using the toning shoes. Brands that sold toning shoes include Skechers, Avia, Champion, Danskin Now, New Balance, and others sold in Sears and Kmart stores. The VP of a trade group that represents Skechers says the shoes are being misused, and there is risk because they are an exercise product. There are several rules of use including using them for just 25-45 minutes a day the first two weeks.
