Invokana®: The Diabetes Drug Now Linked To Amputations...
Millions of Americans with type-2 diabetes may have been prescribed a drug that puts them at serious increased risk of toe, foot and leg amputations.
The popular diabetes drug in question is Invokana® (canagliflozin), an SGLT2 inhibitor class of drug that was introduced in 2013 and has quickly become one of the most commonly prescribed medications for type-2 diabetics.
Invokana® works by altering kidney function so as to increase frequency of urination, which in turn allows the body to excrete higher levels of glucose. But now we learn the dangers...
DANGER: FDA Issues Black Box Warning...
Results from two large clinical studies showing Invokana® users may have twice the normal amputation risk has prompted the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to issue two powerful safety warnings.
The FDA's most recent warning being their May 2017 "INVOKANA® BLACK BOX WARNING" -- which is the strictest warning that can be applied to a drug.
These warnings have sent shockwaves across the diabetes community, leaving many wondering if their amputation was the result of Invokana®
Results of Invokana® Clinical Trials Move FDA To Issue Most Severe Safety Alert For Amputation Risks
Two large Invokana® clinical trials meant to study the drug's cardiovascular effects unexpectedly revealed an alarmingly high incidence of toe, foot and leg amputations in users of Invokana® compared to placebo.
These clinical trials were the CANVAS and CANVAS-R studies -- which demonstrated a doubling of the rate of amputations in the group taking Invokana® compared to the placebo group.
FDA's Statement On Invokana® & Amputation:
An excerpt from the FDA's May 2017 black box warning...
[ 5-16-2017 ] Based on new data from two large clinical trials, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has concluded that the type 2 diabetes medicine canagliflozin (Invokana, Invokamet, Invokamet XR) causes an increased risk of leg and foot amputations. We are requiring new warnings, including our most prominent Boxed Warning, to be added to the canagliflozin drug labels to describe this risk.
Invokana®: Were Physicians & Patients Properly Warned?
You may be asking yourself right now, "Why weren't these amputation risks disclosed to me?"
And more importantly, "Did my physician know about these risks for amputation when I was prescribed Invokana®?"
ANSWER: What Every Patient Should Know...
It's important, as a patient, to understand that there are strict rules that pharmaceutical companies must adhere to (as mandated by the FDA), that ensure doctors and their patients are properly informed of the risks associated with any drug.
Drug companies are forced, by law, to disclose all known health risks associated with their drug.
They disclose these risks on the drug's "label", in the form of a warning.
INVOKANA®: ZERO Warning For Amputation Risks
Despite the clinical trial data both suggesting increased amputations and warranting the FDA to issue a black box warning... Janssen Pharmaceutical (manufacturer of Invokana®) may have FAILED TO PROPERLY WARN both patients and doctors of the KNOWN RISKS of amputation with Invokana®.
You (the patient), and your doctor, may NEVER have been granted the opportunity every patient deserves to make an informed decision about the use of a drug.
The Manufacturers of Invokana® May Have Known About The Increased Risks... Yet Failed To Properly Warn Patients and Their Doctors About The Risks
Lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceutical® (maker of Invokana®) may allege that they knew of the increased risks of toe, foot and leg amputation with their prescription Invokana® diabetes medication, yet failed to properly warn patients and doctors about this serious side effect.
What To Do If You Suffered A Toe, Foot or Leg Amputation While Taking Invokana® For Diabetes
The law protects patients from dangerous drugs that can cause serious harm...
If you (or a loved one) used Invokana® for diabetes and subsequently suffered an amputation, this may be the most important message you will ever read.
Here is why...
The popular diabetes medication Invokana® has been linked to these amputation risks...
- Toe amputations
- Foot amputations
- Leg amputations
When Drug Manufacturers Fail To Properly Warn of Dangers, Innocent Patients Become Victims
As a result of the manufacturer of Invokana® failing to properly warn patients and doctors of these amputation risks, you or your loved one likely suffered emotional and physical stress, along with unintended financial burdens -- such as surgeries and rehabilitation, time off work, costs of prosthetic fittings and more.
Why should you suffer and be responsible for an amputation caused by a drug manufacturer's negligence?
As a victim of a drug that potentially FAILED to properly warn you of such amputation risks with their medication, you may be entitled to what are called "money damages", which is a legal term for money awarded from individual lawsuits, settlements and class action lawsuits.
All potential Invokana® lawsuits are currently being investigated on the grounds that Janssen Pharmaceutical® (maker of Invokana®)...
- failed to properly warn patients and doctors of known amputation risks
