Kia Sorento Recalled for Transmission Problem

A potentially defective transmission has resulted in the recall of as many as 12,690 Kia Sorento vehicles, just days after another recall involving 60,000 Kia Spectra cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explained, “The intermediate shaft may suffer from noise and excessive wear due to a misalignment of the intermediate shaft with the right-side output gear. Continuing to drive the vehicle in this condition leads to the development of a whirring/whining noise and can eventually cause damage to the automatic transmission.” The risk of a car crash is greatly increased due to loss of motive power.

According to news reports, the cars involved in the recall are two-wheel-drive’s with 2.4-liter engines and automatic transmissions. So far, four complaints have been received by the agency along with five complaints of motive power loss, due to transmission failure. The company has promised to replace car owners’ output gear and shaft for free. Kia may be contacted at 800-333-4542 for further details.
