What Is Happening?

Millions of Americans who have stomach cancer (aka. gastric cancer), or have had an chronic kidney disease or acute kidney injury, are discovering their use of popular heartburn medications, called "Proton Pump Inhibitors", may be to blame.

The most popular proton pump inhibitors in use today are Nexium®, Prilosec® and Prevacid®. These drugs are used to treat heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux and can be obtained both over the counter (OTC) and by prescription.

Watch the video (below) for a quick overview of how these heartburn meds are now under scrutiny for kidney complications (more on cancer, below).

Peer-Reviewed Journal Finds 244% Increase In Stomach Cancer

An 8-year study by the University of Hong Kong of 63,397 patients who had been treated for stomach infection with H. pylori found that patients that took proton pump inhibitor heartburn medications showed a 244% increased risk of developing stomach cancer (aka. gastric cancer), compared to those patients who did not take these heartburn medications.

Johns Hopkins Finds 20-50% Increased Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease

A study conducted by Johns Hopkins and published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that these proton pump inhibitor heartburn medications are linked to a 20 to 50% increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

1 out of 4 Kidney Disease Patients Previously Took Heartburn Meds

Another study of 24,000 patients found that 1 out of 4 chronic kidney disease patients had previously been treated with one of these proton pump inhibitor heartburn drugs.

Other Studies Link These Heartburn Meds To Acute Kidney Injuries (like Acute Interstitial Nephritis)

Additional studies also show a link between Nexium®, Prilosec® and Prevacid® with acute kidney injuries (AKI), including acute interstitial nephritis.

In fact, the Johns Hopkins study in JAMA found that proton pump inhibitors (Nexium®, Prilosec®, Prevacid®) were independent risk factors for chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injuries (AKI), while H₂ antagonist heartburn drugs (ie. Zantac®, Pepcid®) showed no increased risk.

How These Heartburn Drugs Can Damage Your Kidneys...

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like Nexium®, Prilosec® and Prevacid® all treat heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. But doctors and researchers aren't exactly sure why PPI's are damaging the kidneys in the process.

Many scientists believe PPI's cause magnesium levels to drop in patients, which often damages the kidneys. Other researchers believe that kidney function is damaged due to repeated occurrences of acute kidney inflammation -- which proton pump inhibitors are linked to.

What Dr. Oz & The New York Times Say About These Risks...

A growing number of well-known doctors and news outlets are speaking out about the risks of proton pump inhibitor heartburn medications and their link to complications.

Dr. Oz wrote an article in the Idaho Statesman and spoke about the very real risks associated with PPI's. As well as the fact that research has estimated that up to 70% of prescriptions for these heartburn drugs have no appropriate FDA-approved indication...

"Trouble is, up to two-thirds of people who take PPIs don’t really need them. That may be you if your doctor is not monitoring your use of an OTC version (such as Nexium, Prilosec or Prevacid), or if your doc prescribed one but hasn’t checked to see if you’ve healed." -- Dr. Mehmet Oz

In the New York Times article, pharmacist and past president of the American Geriatrics Society Dr. Todd Semla explained the false sense of safety the comedic drug commercials portray...

"I don’t see Larry the Cable Guy saying, 'If you take this drug often, your kidneys may be affected or you could break a hip." -- Dr. Todd Semla

"If you believe that an overweight comedian in a bad shirt knows enough medicine for you to follow his advice, then the ad agencies have got you in their pocket. Read the fine print. That’s where you’ll find important info about the very real risks of PPIs." -- Dr. Mehmet Oz
Proton Pump Inhibitor Lawsuit

The Manufacturers of Nexium®, Prilosec® and Prevacid® May Have Known About The Increased Risks... Yet Failed To Properly Warn Patients and Their Doctors About The Risks

Lawsuits against AstraZeneca® (maker of Nexium® & Prilosec®) and Takeda® (maker of Prevacid®) may allege that they knew of the increased risks of stomach cancer, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injuries (AKI) with both their prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications, yet failed to properly warn patients and doctors about the risks and negative side effects.

Proton Pump Inhibitor Settlements and Class Actions

What To Do If You Were Diagnosed With Stomach Cancer or Kidney Complications
...And Had Previously Used Nexium®, Prilosec® or Prevacid®

The law protects patients from dangerous drugs that can cause serious harm...

If you (or a loved one) used a Nexium®, Prilosec® or Prevacid® for heartburn (or related conditions) and was subsequently diagnosed with stomach cancer or kidney complications, this may be the most important message you will ever read.

Here is why...

These popular heartburn medications (called proton pump inhibitors) have been linked to many of the following complications...

  • Stomach cancer (aka. gastric cancer)
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • Acute kidney injury (AKI)
  • Kidney or renal failure
  • Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN)
  • Need for kidney transplant
  • Need for dialysis
  • ...and other serious kidney diagnoses

When Drug Manufacturers Fail To Properly Warn of Dangers, Innocent Patients Become Victims

As a result of the manufacturer of Nexium®, Prilosec® and Prevacid® failing to properly warn patients and doctors of these stomach cancer and kidney risks, you or your loved one likely suffered emotional and physical stress, along with unintended financial burdens -- like doctor or hospital visits, time off work, necessary treatments and/or surgeries to help with your kidney complications.

Why should you suffer and be responsible for the stress caused by a drug manufacturer's mistake?

As a victim of a drug that potentially FAILED to properly warn you of such kidney risks with their medication, you may be entitled to what are called "money damages", which is just a fancy legal term for money awarded from individual lawsuits, settlements and class action lawsuits.

All potential Nexium®, Prilosec® and Prevacid® lawsuits are currently being investigated on the grounds that AstraZeneca® (maker of Nexium® & Prilosec®) and Takeda® (maker of Prevacid®)...

  • failed to properly warn patients and doctors of known risks
