ParaGard® IUD: The Device Can Fracture During A Doctor's Attempt to Remove It...

ParaGard® is a popular intrauterine device (IUD) used as form of long-term birth control in women. The device is implanted into the uterus for up to 10 years to prevent pregnancies.

The ParaGard® IUD is a flexible “T” shaped device made of plastic. Wrapped around the device is copper, which is slowly released into the uterus preventing pregnancy by interfering with sperm motility, implantation and fertilization of eggs.

The ParaGard® IUD has been a popular choice among women because it is hormone free and doesn’t pose the same risks of blood clots as the other hormone-containing IUD’s.

ParaGard® can be easily implanted at the doctor’s office and can last inside the woman’s uterus for up to 10 years, or until the patient wishes to have it removed.

But new reports show serious complications can occur at the time of removal...

The “Broken” IUD: Medical Journal Demonstrates Serious Repercussions of Fractured IUD’s -- And All Were ParaGard® Brand

An article published in the peer-reviewed medical journal, Open Journal of Clinical & Medical Case Reports, detailed the stories of many women who had received ParaGard® copper IUD’s and subsequently suffered severe and devastating complications during removal, including...

  • Broken or fractured IUD
  • Broken pieces lodged into uterine cavity
  • Uterine infection from missing pieces
  • Pain, cramping or bleeding due to irritation by broken pieces
  • Migration of broken pieces into other organs
  • Perforation of uterine lining or wall

The researchers intended the report to bring a heightened awareness to clinicians about the possibility of breakage with ParaGard® IUD’s, as well as offer management strategies for treating and solving complications when they arise.

Surgery Is Often The Only Option After A ParaGard® IUD Breaks...

Women who suffer ParaGard® IUD breakage typically require serious, invasive treatment to remove the broken pieces, necessitating...

  • Full, invasive surgery to remove remnant pieces
  • Uterine incision
  • Total hysterectomy
  • General anesthesia
  • Ultrasound imaging prior to surgery

Such serious surgical consequences also often come paired with the reality that...

  • The patient may never be able to have children again
  • Future vaginal deliveries may never be an option again

While many women who use the ParaGard® IUD will never suffer such extreme complications, the researchers of the published report were quick to note...

“...while still rare, this complication is likely UNDER reported.”

What To Do If You Suffered Serious Complications Attempting To Have The ParaGard® IUD Removed

The law protects patients from dangerous medical devices that can cause serious harm...

If you (or a loved one) received the ParaGard® IUD and suffered complications during or after the device was removed, this may be the most important message you will ever read.

Here is why...

CooperSurgical, Inc., the maker of ParaGard® may be to blame for any of the following conditions or negative consequences during or after installation...

  • Fractured or broken IUD
  • Broken pieces of IUD left embedded in the uterus
  • Need for invasive surgery or treatment to remove remnant IUD parts
  • Need for hysterectomy
  • ...or any other significant complications

When Manufacturers Fail To Design A Safe Medical Device, Innocent Patients Become Victims

As a result of the manufacturer of ParaGard® IUD failing to design a safer device, you or your loved one likely suffered emotional and physical stress, along with unintended financial burdens -- like doctor or hospital visits, time off work, necessary surgeries or treatments to fix problems that arose, and more.

Why should you suffer and be responsible for the financial burden caused by the manufacturer's mistake?

As a victim of a medical device that SHOULD have either A) been pulled from the market immediately after mounting reports of breakage upon removal, or B) been updated with new warnings for doctors and patients, you may be entitled to what are called "money damages", which is just a fancy legal term for money awarded from individual lawsuits, settlements and class action lawsuits.

ParaGard® IUD lawsuits are currently being investigated against CooperSurgical, Inc. on the grounds that...

  • they failed to warn patients and providers about the potential risks
  • they knew about the increased risks, yet failed to redesign the product to be safer
