FDA Issues Safety Alert: Many Ultrasound Gels Contaminated With Dangerous B. Cepacia (Bcc) Bacteria...
On August 4th, 2021, Eco-Med® Pharmaceutical issued a voluntary recall for just one of its ultrasound gel product lines after 15 people were reported to have developed a bacterial infection after use.
However, on August 18th, 2021, The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued its own safety alert halting use of ALL Eco-Med® ultrasound gels and lotions.
"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is informing health care providers, health care facility risk managers, and procurement staff to immediately stop using and discard all ultrasound gels and lotions manufactured by Eco-Med Pharmaceutical, Inc., due to risk of bacterial contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc)." -- The Food & Drug Administration
This swift move to stop use of ALL Eco-Med® ultrasound gels and lotions were due to the following, as stated by the FDA...
"The FDA's determination is based on concerns that the company did not complete its investigation of the issues, the root cause and extent of bacterial contamination was not identified, and multiple products could be affected by manufacturing issues associated with the company’s ultrasound gel (such as inappropriate testing of finished product, inadequate testing of raw materials, and a lack of environmental controls)." -- The Food & Drug Administration
These scathing statements by the FDA were then followed by the following...
"Eco-Med has shut down all operations and is no longer manufacturing or distributing any products." -- The Food & Drug Administration
Dozens of Serious Bacterial Infections Already Reported...
To date, the FDA has received reports of at least 66 bacterial infections in patients who received ultrasound, or ultrasonography.
These infections can be mild or severe -- and can often even lead to sepsis or death, especially in immunocompromised patients.
Patients at particular risk are those with cystic fibrosis, chronic granulomatous disease or serious lung conditions.
Contaminated With: Burkholderia Cepacia Complex (Bcc)...
Burkholderia cepacia complex -- commonly referred to as B. cepacia, or even Bcc, is a highly antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria that can be easily transmitted in healthcare settings.
The presence of this potentially deadly bacteria in Eco-Med® ultrasound gels and lotions is serious because the contamination can spread quickly to the patient in contact with the gel or lotion -- especially if the patient is immunocompromised in anyway.
